The photograph
Webb’s NIRCam, Picture of the Month for August 2026. A cometary globule in the Carina Nebula, about 7,500 light-years away. Inside sits a young cluster of roughly 70 stars, including a rare O-type about 19 times the Sun’s mass. Winds from nearby giants, including Eta Carinae, carved the open-chest shape.
The mission
James Webb Space Telescope · NIRCam · program 5408
Carina is the nearest high-mass star-forming region. Program 5408 (PI: Reiter) asked how newborn stars gather gas from their surroundings and throw it back out as jets. Webb was looking through the dust at those outflows, at disks around the young stars, and at how feedback from monsters like Eta Carinae sculpts the next generation of suns. The Treasure Chest is one of those workshops, caught mid-carve.
The metal
Dye-infused into aluminum. No paper, no glass, no frame. A hidden float mount sits the panel ½ in off the wall.
