Falcon Heavy Transit

This photograph was taken at 7:26:30am ET on 30 August 2026, as Falcon Heavy climbed from LC-39A at Kennedy with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope in the fairing. The stack is a dark silhouette just under the top of the solar disk. The exhaust is a bright, textured column down the face of the Sun, and the morning sky around it is a warm haze.

Falcon Heavy is a three-core heavy-lift rocket. This flight carried the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from pad 39A toward Sun–Earth L2. Roman was built at NASA Goddard as a wide infrared survey telescope, with a 2.4-meter mirror the same size as Hubble’s and a field of view at least a hundred times larger. Each frame is meant to take in a patch of sky Hubble would need many pointings to cover.

The observatory separated at 7:58am ET and is on its way to Sun–Earth L2 for a five-year primary mission to measure dark energy, map galaxies, and find planets around other stars. This is the vehicle in the first seconds of that climb, crossing the Sun.
